Lithuania wants to remove the ban on nuclear weapons from the constitution
The Seimas (parliament) of Lithuania has registered a bill on abandoning the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons.
The legislative assembly secretariat reported this.
"The bill initiative was supported by the signatures of 50 deputies, which is enough for its registration," the message notes.
The bill provides that Article 137 of the country's constitution, which prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, on the territory of Lithuania, will be deleted.
The day before, President Gitanas Nausėda held a meeting with the participation of the head of government, the minister of defense, the speaker of the Seimas, and the chairmen of parliamentary factions. Its participants supported the intention to abandon this constitutional ban.
To amend the constitution, the Seimas must vote twice with a three-month break. The innovation must be supported by a qualified majority - 94 out of 141.
