Haaretz: Israel gains nothing from recognizing 'Armenian genocide'
Israel chose an unfortunate moment to recognize the "Armenian genocide" and the country gains nothing from this decision.
The Israeli publication Haaretz reports this, citing a diplomatic source.
The publication notes that this decision (of the Israeli government - ed.) was made at a time when Armenia is trying to normalize relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. According to the Israeli diplomatic source, Israel gains nothing from this decision.
The article notes that the reaction of most residents of Armenia to Israel's decisions was mixed. "On social networks, opinions were divided: from doubts about Israel's motives to open and frank ridicule of its attempt to 'atone for its sins' through recognition," the material emphasizes.
The reaction of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was also restrained, the author notes.
"Israel's decision to recognize the 'Armenian genocide' was made completely unexpectedly and, as far as we know, without any consultations with the Republic of Armenia. The recognition occurred just at the moment when Armenia is in the process of normalizing relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey," the article emphasizes.
The author notes that Baku was also surprised by this decision by Israel: "It seems that Azerbaijan's interests were not taken into account when making this decision. Despite close Israeli-Azerbaijani relations and broad cooperation in the fields of armaments, intelligence, oil and gas, as far as we know, Azerbaijan was not informed before the announcement of the decision. In response, Azerbaijan called on the Israeli government to reconsider this decision."
