Cultural diplomacy: how various religions have coexisted in Azerbaijan for centuries
Azerbaijan emphasizes centuries-old religious coexistence as part of its national identity and cultural diplomacy.
According to the country's religious leaders, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities have lived side by side here for many generations.
In Baku, the Catholic church serves both expats and locals, and its leadership notes that it regularly meets with the Sheikh-ul-Islam and the heads of the Jewish and Orthodox communities. Historical churches in Sheki and Gakh reflect the country's Christian heritage.
The authorities are investing in the restoration of places of worship and signing cooperation agreements with the Vatican, including a memorandum from September 2025 on the digitization and restoration of historical manuscripts.
