40,000 people left homeless in Indonesia

About 40,000 people have been left homeless and almost 12,000 homes were damaged as a result of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck on August 15 in the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara off the coast of the island of Flores.

This was reported by the newspaper Jakarta Globe, citing Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

According to the latest data, the number of earthquake victims has reached 70 people, and 1,182 people were injured. In three provinces, 16,400 families were affected by the disaster. In the affected areas, 11,925 homes, 663 educational institutions, 184 government buildings, 182 medical facilities, 173 religious institutions and dozens of other infrastructure facilities, including roads and bridges, were damaged.

Rescue services are continuing to search for the missing. The power supply in the affected areas has been almost completely restored. The Antara news agency, citing Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, reported that the country's authorities have sent a total of 253 tons of aid to the earthquake-stricken province of East Nusa Tenggara.
