German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statement that Iranian authorities 'humiliate' the US with their negotiation tactics could exacerbate the rift in transatlantic relations.

This assessment was made by Bloomberg.

On Monday, during a meeting with schoolchildren in the city of Marsberg, Merz said that Iran is 'very skillful' in negotiating with the US, forcing Washington to send negotiators to Islamabad only to return empty-handed. According to him, the Iranian leadership thereby 'humiliates an entire nation.'

The agency called this statement 'unusually candid,' noting that it carries the risk of 'deepening the rift in transatlantic relations.' 'The statement points to a reassessment of relations with [US President Donald] Trump by some European leaders. Attempts to win favor have been replaced by a more sober view of the American president, who has repeatedly questioned NATO's role, supported European far-right forces, and threatened to seize Greenland, a Danish territory,' the agency writes.

Although Merz visited the White House in March and this visit underscored the friendly nature of the relationship between the two leaders, the chancellor has become more critical of the American campaign against Iran amid high energy prices that are painfully affecting the German economy, the agency explained.
