Brussels says it will support Armenia in its desire to become an EU member
The European Union will support Armenia in its desire to become an EU member.
This was stated by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, commenting on the latest statements regarding the republic's membership in the EU and the EAEU. Her words are reported by RIA Novosti.
"The meeting of the European Political Community, as well as the EU-Armenia summit, showed which path they (Armenia - ed.) want to take, and Europe will support them," she said in Brussels.
Recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin last Saturday proposed discussing the issue of Armenia's plans for the EU at the next summit of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that the country wants to become a member of the European Union, but for this it needs to meet its standards. At the same time, Putin during negotiations with Pashinyan on April 1 noted that being in a customs union with the EU and with the EAEU is impossible by definition; this is an economic issue.
The President of the Russian Federation stated that for Yerevan it would be correct in relation to the citizens of Armenia and to Russia, as the main economic partner of the republic, to hold a referendum on the development of cooperation with the European Union. In this case, Russia could draw appropriate conclusions and go along the path of a "soft, intelligent and mutually beneficial divorce."
