Zakharova accuses EU of attempt to control elections
The European Union manually attempted to control the course of the electoral process in Armenia.
This was stated at a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Any person who has followed the agenda even a little could not help but notice how the EU manually tried to control the course of the electoral cycle. Here you have rapid response missions to hybrid threats, and a massive landing for conducting political shows in Yerevan in early May — at the height of the pre-election campaign, and a call from Ursula von der Leyen on June 4, when she urgently gathered financial support for Armenia. The cherry on top was the visit of the head of the EU delegation to the Central Election Commission before the vote count," Zakharova said.
According to her, in order to obtain the desired result, Brussels easily turned a blind eye to everything related to democracy, legality, and the principles of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
"The level of fraud and manipulation on the part of Brussels is beyond the pale. Even before the voting, European structures imposed a false dilemma on Armenian society, presenting the parliamentary elections as almost a fateful choice between the EU and Russia. This is cynical manipulation that has nothing to do with the genuine interests of the Armenian people," Zakharova said.
She noted that the European Union in its current form is not able to offer its partners anything "except economic stagnation, an absolutely thoughtless arms race, extremely dangerous foreign policy adventures, including joining the hostile anti-Russian, Russophobic policy."
Zakharova also noted that the atmosphere in which the entire electoral process took place in Armenia, including numerous reports confirmed by facts about violations of voting rules, raises legitimate questions from the Russian side. "One of them: to what extent is Yerevan ready in practice to follow the principles of democracy and the rule of law proclaimed by the Armenian leadership? I suggest waiting for the final election results. In Moscow, they are watching what is happening with the utmost attention," she said.
