Armenia may introduce a 30-year ban on participation in elections

Political forces in Armenia may be barred from participating in elections if their representatives commit serious criminal offenses.

This was stated in parliament by Armenian Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan, Sputnik Armenia reports.

According to her, stricter norms may be enshrined in the draft of the new edition of the Constitution if public and political consensus on this issue can be reached.

Galyan noted that the demand for such changes has formed in society against the backdrop of events that occurred before and during the past elections.

The minister also reported that an initiative is being considered providing for the deprivation of the right to participate in elections for a period of 30 years for the first 50 candidates from the electoral lists of parties whose representatives were found guilty of serious criminal violations.
