Von der Leyen promised Ukraine several billion euros by the end of the month

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised to provide Ukraine with €9 billion by the end of June, the European Commission website said.

“We have transferred almost three billion euros to Ukraine from the Ukraine facility. And this month we will allocate the first tranche under our €90 billion loan to Ukraine. Thus, by the end of the month we will provide Ukraine with 6 billion euros for drones and more than 3 billion euros in macro-financial assistance. And, of course, new tranches will follow soon,” she noted.

Von der Leyen also stressed that the first cluster on the path to Ukraine and Moldova joining the European Union will be opened in the near future, which will mark the beginning of official negotiations on these countries’ accession to the EU.

On June 8, European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari said the European Union intends to transfer €9.1 billion to Ukraine in June under the new lending mechanism.

In early June, Politico reported that NATO member states are discussing an initiative to allocate €70 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine for military spending. Of the total, €40 billion are new commitments, while €30 billion are part of the European Union’s €90 billion loan.

At the end of May, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada ratified an agreement with the EU on a €90 billion loan. Kyiv is expected to receive half of the amount in 2026. €28.3 billion will go to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and €16.7 billion will go toward macro-financial stabilization and covering the state budget deficit.
