G7 leaders advocate reducing dependence on energy supplies through Hormuz
Countries of the Group of Seven (G7) have advocated for the diversification of energy resource supply routes and reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.
This is stated in a joint declaration on geopolitical issues by participants in the summit in France.
"We commit to accelerating the diversification of energy resource supply routes in order to reduce global vulnerability associated with the Strait of Hormuz," the document says.
It notes that "the foundation of international trade is the right to free passage [of vessels] without restrictions or fees." "We agree that an international independent defense initiative led by France and the United Kingdom can play an important role in facilitating the resumption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz," the statement says.
Earlier, the United Kingdom had stated its readiness to participate with France in restoring shipping in the Strait of Hormuz by deploying a "defensive independent multilateral mission" with an emphasis on demining assistance.
