EU discusses with Baku and Yerevan development of regional routes
The European Union is discussing with the authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan the question of how Brussels can best support the development of communication routes in the South Caucasus.
As Armenpress reports, this was stated by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Magdalena Grono, at a briefing for journalists in Yerevan, speaking about the security situation in the South Caucasus and the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
"Progress in building sustainable peace in the region is incredibly impressive, and of course we, as the European Union, strive to be strong partners for the Republic of Armenia, as well as for Azerbaijan, so that this peace becomes a sustainable reality that benefits all people," Grono emphasized.
The EU Special Representative also stressed that Brussels supports the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan in various ways. "Of course, there is political support for the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan in advancing the peace process, but efforts are also being made to support specific areas where discussions are underway that can benefit people on both sides. Therefore, of course, within this framework we are considering how we can best support humanitarian issues, and demining plays a key role in this. It can have an impact on directly affected communities. It can also have an important impact if we consider the transport infrastructure development program and the broader program of unblocking the region, since new transit lines are being built," the EU Special Representative noted, referring to the modern demining machine that arrived in Armenia today and was donated by the European Union.
Grono confirmed that the regional transport infrastructure development program and the broader program of unblocking the South Caucasus are also in the focus of the EU. "We are discussing with the Armenian authorities, as well as, of course, with our Azerbaijani partners, how best to support the development of these routes so that all countries participate in this, so that all residents of settlements located along the route benefit from it, and of course so that we make a significant contribution to the EU priority project of the communication network 'Middle Corridor' connecting Asia with Europe through the South Caucasus," Magdalena Grono emphasized.
