András Baka takes office as president of Hungary

András Baka has taken office as president of Hungary.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced this on X.

"As of today, August 19, 2026, the president of Hungary is András Baka. I wish Mr. President great success, good health, and as much humanism as possible in his work," the head of government wrote.

András Baka was elected by parliament on August 11 as the only candidate. The post of president of Hungary became vacant in July after the removal from office of Tamás Sulyok, who had assumed it in 2024 at the proposal of the right-wing coalition of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Sulyok was removed as a result of the adoption of an amendment to the constitution proposed by the new prime minister, Magyar. The president of Hungary performs mainly ceremonial functions, with power concentrated in the hands of the government led by the prime minister.
