Russian Foreign Ministry: Armenian authorities should not hide behind the word "diversification"
The Armenian authorities are hiding behind the word "diversification" a turn away from Eurasian integration and Russia toward a hostile European Union, said Alexey Fadeev, deputy director of the Information and Press Department of Russia's Foreign Ministry.
"Concepts should not be substituted, because if a turn away from Eurasian integration and a traditional ally toward an, generally speaking, openly hostile to Russia European Union, which is seriously discussing the possibility of a direct clash with Russia, is hidden behind the beautiful word 'diversification,' then here, generally speaking, the conclusion is obvious," Fadeev said at a briefing, commenting on recent statements by the Armenian leadership.
He called this "outright deception" not only of partners in Eurasian integration, but also of the population of Armenia itself: according to Fadeev, the socio-economic consequences of such a "leap into Europe" are being concealed from Armenian citizens, while current difficulties with exports are being presented as certain restrictions imposed by Moscow.
"These are not our restrictions, this is the reality that awaits the republic if traditional ties are severed," the diplomat emphasized.
Fadeev added that the declarations on cooperation with Western countries signed by Yerevan "are not legally binding," unlike the array of Russian-Armenian treaties and agreements.
He recalled that back in 2024, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen noted in a report by the "Friends of Armenia" network, in black and white, that the republic is a "low-cost enterprise" for the West.
