Naryshkin: Yerevan will make a mistake if it focuses on 'Western aid'
The leadership of Armenia will make a mistake if it focuses exclusively on "some kind of help, support from the West," this will complicate the situation inside the republic, TASS was told by Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of the Russian Federation Sergei Naryshkin.
"If the Armenian leadership focuses exclusively on some kind of help, support from the West, then, of course, it will make a mistake, and in that case the situation inside the country will become more complicated. Of course, additional barriers and difficulties will arise in the economic development of the country. But I still hope that the leadership of Armenia will act reasonably," Naryshkin said.
Yerevan has recently stated its course toward integration with the European Union (EU). The Parliament of Armenia on March 26, 2025, adopted a law on the start of the process of the republic's accession to the EU. At the same time, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan asserted that Yerevan does not intend to leave the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and hopes to combine membership in the organization and integration into the EU for as long as possible.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, integration with the EU automatically entails the cessation of Armenia's interaction with the EAEU, the loss of all associated preferences from which Yerevan benefited throughout its time in the Eurasian Economic Union.
