EU wants to limit new members' rights for up to 15 years, including stripping veto rights
The EU is preparing to change the terms of union membership for future members with a number of significant restrictions for 5-15 years, including stripping the right to veto, for Ukraine and Moldova, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said.
“This will be a new generation of accession treaties (for new members) in the sense that we will have new safeguard guarantees that will allow us to ensure exactly what you mentioned (non-use of the veto right), so that we are confident that new members will follow European rules 5, 10 or 15 years later,” she said, responding to a question about whether the EU fears that Ukraine will uncontrollably use its veto right upon joining the union.
In June 2022, the EU granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate country status. The European Union has repeatedly acknowledged that this decision was largely symbolic in order to support Kyiv and Chisinau in their confrontation with Moscow.
