Vucic allows for resignation from post of Serbian president and nomination for prime minister

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that he is considering the possibility of resigning from the post of head of state and nominating his candidacy for the post of prime minister of the republic.

"I plan to resign, I will notify you about this, there will be no surprises for anyone. I have started packing books in the presidential residence, I have a lot of them," Vucic said on Belgrade radio.

According to the head of state, he may resign from his post "even earlier" than in three to four months. Vucic also emphasized that he thinks "every day" about nominating his candidacy for the post of head of the country's government.

Vucic was first elected president of Serbia in 2017. In 2022, he was re-elected for a second term. His presidential term expires in 2027.

On May 21, Vucic announced that parliamentary elections will be held in the fall, between the end of September and mid-November. Speaker of the National Assembly (unicameral parliament) of Serbia Ana Brnabic reported that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party will propose that Vucic become its candidate for prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
