Azerbaijan strengthens its position in the system of international governance
In world politics, there are many ways to measure a state's international authority.
Some focus on economic indicators, others on military potential, and still others on the scale of diplomatic activity. However, there is another important criterion that allows for a fairly objective assessment of the level of trust in a given country on the part of the international community. This refers to the results of elections to governing and elective bodies of international organizations.
Each such vote represents a kind of exam on a state's reputation. A country's candidacy is voted on not declaratively, but based on a concrete assessment of its foreign policy course, the degree of responsibility in international affairs, the ability to fulfill its obligations, and the readiness to contribute to solving global problems. This is why Azerbaijan's successes in international elections in recent years deserve special attention.
The dynamics of the development of Azerbaijani diplomacy indicate that the country has managed not only to strengthen its positions at the regional level but also to significantly expand its opportunities for influence on a global scale. The consistent victories of Azerbaijani candidates in UN structures and other international organizations have become a natural result of a long-term foreign policy strategy based on the principles of pragmatism, mutual respect, and constructive cooperation.
Year of 100 percent results
The results of 2025 deserve special attention, as it became one of the most successful periods in the history of Azerbaijani electoral diplomacy. All without exception the candidacies put forward by Azerbaijan to elective bodies of international organizations received the support of the member states of the respective structures.
This refers to 14 different candidacies, each of which was elected based on the voting results. Such a result is not merely a statistical achievement. It indicates that representatives of various regions of the world—from Europe and Asia to Africa and Latin America—view Azerbaijan as a state capable of effectively participating in the work of international institutions and making a practical contribution to their activities.
One hundred percent successful results in such a competitive environment represent an indicator that only a few states manage to achieve. International elections are traditionally accompanied by serious competition, diplomatic consultations, and complex coordination of the interests of various groups of countries. This is why the complete success of all nominated candidacies acquires particular political significance.
It is also important that this is not a one-time achievement but a continuation of a stable trend. The victories of recent years logically fit into the overall picture of the consistent strengthening of Azerbaijan's international positions and the expansion of its presence in key mechanisms of global governance.
Broad spectrum of international activity
A characteristic feature of Azerbaijan's successes is their universality. The mandates obtained cover a wide variety of areas of international cooperation, which allows us to speak of the comprehensive nature of the country's foreign policy activity.
Among the spheres in which Azerbaijani representatives have received the support of the international community are issues of sustainable development, migration policy, tourism, social progress, environmental protection, protection of cultural heritage, humanitarian interaction, and many other areas.
This diversity indicates that Azerbaijan is perceived not as a state focused exclusively on solving its own regional tasks, but as an active participant in the discussion of the global agenda. Today, the international community expects states to be able to participate in the search for solutions to a wide variety of contemporary issues—from climate change and migration to the protection of cultural heritage and ensuring sustainable development.
The successful promotion of Azerbaijani candidates across such a broad range of areas demonstrates the country's readiness for active participation in the work of international institutions in virtually all key spheres of international cooperation.
Significant success in the UN system
A special place among the latest achievements is occupied by the results of elections to UN treaty bodies on human rights.
Only in June 2026 did Azerbaijan achieve convincing results in elections to three of the most important committees of this global organization at once: the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Human Rights Committee (ICCPR), and the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
The significance of these elections is difficult to overestimate. UN treaty bodies are important expert mechanisms that monitor the fulfillment of states' international obligations in the field of human rights. Work in such structures requires a high level of professionalism, international recognition, and trust on the part of member states.
Taking into account the results of previous elections, Azerbaijani representatives are already members of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), as well as the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW).
As a result, Azerbaijan has gained representation in five of the ten existing UN treaty bodies on human rights. Such an indicator is exceptional even by international standards.
Among the most represented states in the world
The achieved level of presence in UN treaty mechanisms places Azerbaijan among the states with the broadest representation in this system.
In terms of the number of representatives in UN treaty bodies, Azerbaijan today stands on par with the world's leading states and shares second or third place with China among all members of the Organization.
Such a result is particularly noteworthy given the size of the country and its relatively recent period of independent development. In a relatively short historical period, Azerbaijan has managed to form a professional diplomatic school, train highly qualified personnel, and achieve recognition on the most authoritative international platforms.
In fact, this refers to the formation of a qualitatively new level of Azerbaijan's participation in the activities of international institutions, when the country not only has a presence in global structures but is becoming one of the notable participants in the decision-making process.
UNESCO and the humanitarian dimension of foreign policy
No less indicative are Azerbaijan's successes in UNESCO structures and other international organizations of a humanitarian profile.
Over the past years, Baku has consistently strengthened its positions in the field of preserving cultural heritage, intercultural dialogue, and promoting humanitarian cooperation. International recognition of these efforts is reflected in the support for Azerbaijani initiatives and candidacies in elections to specialized bodies.
A special role is played by the fact that Azerbaijan is historically located at the crossroads of various civilizations and cultural traditions. This unique experience allows the country to serve as an important platform for dialogue between regions, religions, and cultures.
The support of the international community within UNESCO demonstrates recognition of Azerbaijan's contribution to the preservation of world cultural heritage and the development of humanitarian interaction.
Diplomacy of trust
Behind every successful vote are years of consistent diplomatic work. International elections cannot be won solely due to situational political circumstances. They require the formation of stable relations with partners, the fulfillment of obligations undertaken, and the ability to confirm one's reliability through concrete actions.
This is why the current results can be viewed as a reflection of the high level of trust in Azerbaijan on the part of the international community. The support given to Azerbaijani candidates indicates recognition of the country as a responsible participant in international relations, ready for constructive interaction and the search for mutually acceptable solutions.
At the basis of these achievements lies a consistent foreign policy course shaped under the leadership of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. In recent years, Azerbaijan has managed to build a broad network of partnership relations covering states from various regions of the world and representing virtually all the main political and economic centers of the modern world.
New opportunities for promoting national interests
The expansion of presence in international structures has not only image-related significance. The mandates obtained open additional opportunities for promoting national interests on multilateral platforms, expanding international cooperation, and participating in the formation of decisions on key issues of world politics.
At the same time, responsibility also increases. Broader representation presupposes more active participation in the work of international mechanisms, the preparation of recommendations, the development of initiatives, and the search for responses to contemporary challenges.
Nevertheless, it can already be stated today that the results of recent years have become an important confirmation of Azerbaijan's growing international weight. Consistent victories in elections to structures of the UN, UNESCO, and other organizations indicate that the country is strengthening its positions not only as a regional leader of the South Caucasus but also as an increasingly noticeable participant in global processes. The international community is demonstrating its readiness to entrust Azerbaijan with responsible functions, and this is one of the most convincing indicators of any state's authority on the world stage.
