Ukraine comments on drone attack on cargo ships in Azov

Ukraine has commented on information about a nighttime drone attack on cargo ships in the Azov Sea.

Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Robert "Magyar" Brovdi reported in his post on social media that on the night of June 5, Ukrainian drones struck five vessels in the port areas of Mariupol, Berdyansk and in the coastal waters of Crimea.

According to the commander, the targets were cargo ships and tankers that "were used for the illegal export of Ukrainian grain, as well as for the transportation of fuel and military cargo." All the attacked vessels, he said, turned off their ship radars and painted over their side names to conceal their affiliation.

"Large stationary targets classified as military no longer provide long-term survivability and regular transport," wrote Robert Brovdi. He added that "the invaders' smuggling logistics must be stopped."

The operation, according to the commander, was carried out by "Birds of SBS" and "Birds of the 1st OS of the Unnoticed Forces." In the post, he noted the "good overview camera and strong arguments" of the strike drones.

The post is accompanied by footage, presumably taken from drones, showing the outlines of several vessels in nighttime conditions.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier stated: "The motor ships 'Natra' and 'Zircon' were attacked in the Azov Sea by Ukrainian drones."

According to her, this once again "confirms the terrorist nature of the Kyiv regime."

As the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry previously reported, two foreign cargo ships, whose crews included 25 Azerbaijani citizens, were attacked by drones that night: "According to information received from the Russian side, five Azerbaijani citizens were killed in the attack, and three more were injured. The victims were taken to a hospital in the city of Yeisk." It is noted that the indicated vessels do not belong to the Azerbaijani state.
