Serbia declares readiness to join EU without veto right and post of European commissioner

Serbia is ready to renounce the right of veto and the portfolio of a European commissioner for the sake of joining the European Union.

This was stated by Speaker of the National Assembly (unicameral parliament) of the republic Ana Brnabic during the Globsec Forum security conference in Prague.

"We are joining the EU not to create problems and obstacles. We do not need the right of veto. We do not need a commissioner. Moreover, we hope that after joining the EU the number of commissioners will be reduced, which will increase the efficiency of the European administration. This is necessary for our citizens. This is necessary for our companies. And we believe that we will make Europe stronger in political, economic and strategic terms," Brnabic emphasized.

The status of candidates for EU membership is held by Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Montenegro. Brussels is putting pressure on Belgrade to make it agree to grant this status to the unrecognized Kosovo, which is actually equivalent to official recognition of the independence of the region.
