UAE believes EU should more actively ensure security of Strait of Hormuz
EU countries should participate "proactively, not post-conflict" in operations to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic adviser to the UAE president Anwar Gargash expressed this opinion, calling on the community "to take concrete actions."
"Europe needs to participate in ensuring collective maritime security and the free flow of energy carriers and fertilizers through the strait, since this directly affects their interests," he said in a comment to the European publication Politico.
Gargash also called on the EU not to wait for the end of the conflict, but to "act quickly." In addition, he emphasized that the UAE and EU countries "have potential for closer cooperation" in the areas of trade, technology, and defense.
Earlier, Gargash stated that the UAE authorities do not fully understand the meaning of the European initiative regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The Wall Street Journal reported that Europe is working on a plan to control the Strait of Hormuz without the US. The newspaper highlighted three main goals of the European plan: restoring logistics routes through the strait, conducting a demining operation, and ensuring the escort of commercial vessels by warships.
