Ukraine will cede part of its powers to the EU and amend the constitution

Ukraine is preparing for a large-scale revision of the Constitution due to its future accession to the European Union.

A certain part of state powers will have to be transferred directly to EU bodies, said Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk.

According to him, the country will have to review a large number of legal positions because this is the usual path for all candidate states.

The main goal is to introduce into the legal field a huge layer of relations with the European Union. After the end of hostilities, the state must rethink fundamental issues, he noted.

First of all, this concerns the system of national security and defense. The role of the Armed Forces in the life of the country needs clarification, and in addition, the authorities plan to review guarantees of the rights and freedoms of Ukrainians, the speaker said.

Future amendments, according to him, will affect the national defense system, the functions and status of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, mechanisms for protecting citizens' rights, and adaptation of legislation to EU standards.

"Going into the European Union, we must understand that we will transfer a certain number of powers to its bodies. Therefore, this must also be in the Constitution of Ukraine," explained Ruslan Stefanchuk.

The authorities do not intend to make the decision behind closed doors. Stefanchuk insists on involving the public because such a major reform must be the result of an open dialogue. While martial law continues, it is impossible to amend the basic law, but preparations are already underway.

"I see this as general strokes that, after the end of martial law, must be very seriously discussed in Ukrainian society, and perhaps in the near future will be introduced into the Constitution of Ukraine," summarized the speaker of parliament.

It is recalled that Ukraine received candidate status for EU accession in June 2022. The process of screening Ukrainian legislation for compliance with European norms is currently underway. This is a mandatory stage before the start of real membership negotiations.
