Chad withdraws from the International Criminal Court

The government of Chad has decided to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This is stated in a statement by the republic's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It notes that the official notification was transmitted to the UN secretary-general. The authorities explained their decision by the limited effectiveness and selectivity of the ICC. According to the ministry, 9 of the 13 investigations opened by the court concern African states, and six of the seven accused in custody are facing cases related to Africa.

Chad ratified the Rome Statute, on the basis of which the ICC operates, in 2006. According to this document, a state's decision to withdraw officially takes effect one year after the UN secretary-general receives the corresponding notification.
