Rubinyan is the new speaker of Armenia's National Assembly
A secret ballot was held in Armenia's National Assembly to elect a new speaker of parliament.
According to Armenian media, the sole candidate nominated for the post was 36-year-old Ruben Rubinyan, a deputy from the ruling Civil Contract party. He previously served as vice speaker of the legislative body and also represented Yerevan as a special envoy in talks with Turkey on normalizing bilateral relations.
The parliamentary opposition did not support his candidacy
The faction of the "Armenia" bloc completely boycotted the process, while representatives of the "Strong Armenia" bloc had announced in advance their intention to vote against the proposed candidate.
Despite this, the ruling majority provided the necessary support. Following the secret ballot, Ruben Rubinyan received 63 votes "in favor" and was officially elected the new chairman of Armenia's National Assembly.
