Peskov warns Yerevan: Armenia's European turn could bring problems within the EAEU
After submitting an application for membership in the European Union (EU), Yerevan will face deep contradictions within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which will harm Armenia itself.
This was stated to journalists by the press secretary of the president of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, TASS reports.
"There is a very important aspect here, which our representatives and, first of all, the head of our state have also spoken about. After submitting the application [for EU membership], Armenia will have to begin the process of bringing its legislation in a wide variety of areas — trade, phytosanitary, customs and so on and so forth — into line with European norms, with the norms of the European Union. These norms do not coincide with the norms that are adopted in our country and that are adopted within the EAEU space. And it is precisely here that we will face deep contradictions, which first of all will harm Armenia itself," the Kremlin representative described the situation.
The Kremlin representative clarified that this is exactly why, at the last EAEU summit, a statement was adopted in which the heads of state of the bloc called on Armenia to hold a corresponding referendum as soon as possible.
