Tehran confirms talks with Qatari mediators and expects a U.S. response on Tuesday

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Iranian negotiators had been in contact with Qatari mediators and hope to soon receive a U.S. response to the proposals put forward, Al Jazeera reports.

According to the publication, Araghchi told reporters that Tehran had held indirect talks with the United States through Qatari mediators in New York, and hopes that Washington will give an official response on Tuesday.

Araghchi explained that during the trip to New York for the U.N. General Assembly, the Iranian side presented its plan for resolving the crisis and resuming operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Our mission was to convey these conditions to the American side and to other countries, to make sure that the international community knows that Iran has a plan in this regard," the minister said.

He added that during the latest meeting, the Qatari mediators put forward new ideas intended to help overcome the differences, and that these ideas are "being passed on to Washington."

Meanwhile, the Press TV television channel, citing an Iranian official, reported that the talks with Washington still do not concern Tehran's nuclear program.

"Iran's position on the nuclear issue remains unchanged. (...) No discussions are being held on this issue," the official said.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed to reporters that the American side had held talks with the Iranians through mediators on Monday.
