EU may adopt 21st sanctions package against Russia by July

The European Union may adopt the 21st package of anti-Russian sanctions by the end of the current Council of the EU presidency term.

However, this scenario is not guaranteed due to the need for agreement on the package and the complexity of negotiations, Member of the European Parliament Tomash Zdechovsky told Izvestia.

"It is possible by the end of the current Council presidency term, but it is not guaranteed," Zdechovsky said to Izvestia.

He pointed out to the newspaper that the timing of the adoption of the new sanctions package will depend on the agreement among EU members, which requires unanimity. Negotiations on this issue may be complicated, the Member of the European Parliament added.

"Despite the political will to continue putting pressure on Russia, I would be cautious about setting strict deadlines," Zdechovsky noted.

On April 22, EU ambassadors approved funding for Ukraine in the amount of €90 billion and the 20th sanctions package against Russia after Hungary and Slovakia lifted their vetoes. On April 24, the head of the European diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, stated that the leaders of the community's countries have begun preparing the 21st package of restrictions.
