Five die in Indonesia from explosion of World War II bomb
Five people were killed and three are missing after the explosion of a bomb, presumably from World War II, in eastern Indonesia.
The Jakarta Globe newspaper reported this.
According to the newspaper, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon in the Biak Numfor district of Papua province. "The explosion is believed to have been caused by a World War II bomb. The investigation is ongoing," local police said. Agence France-Presse, citing law enforcement, noted that at least 19 people were injured.
The explosion leveled six houses near the scene, the Jakarta Globe wrote. Based on preliminary witness statements, authorities believe the bomb may have detonated when locals tried to open the ordnance. Police also found an unexploded mortar mine nearby.
