U.S. war with Iran cost Pentagon $40 billion

The U.S. Department of Defense's expenses for the operation against Iran amounted to approximately $40 billion.

This was reported by CNN, citing a forthcoming report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS, recognized as an undesirable organization in the Russian Federation).

This amount includes the cost of munitions used, destroyed equipment, and damage to American bases, but does not include operational expenses already included in the Pentagon's budget for fiscal year 2026, said Mark Cancian, a senior advisor at CSIS, to the network.

The expert noted that the most significant expense item for the Department of Defense was munitions, accounting for $26 billion. This is due to the fact that U.S. forces used many long-range, high-tech, expensive weapons. For example, the U.S. expended about a thousand Tomahawk missiles, each costing about $2.5 million, he added.

According to CSIS estimates, the first 100 hours of combat operations cost the U.S. $3.7 billion, and as the conflict progressed, the daily cost of the war decreased due to reduced strike frequency.

On June 18, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that the U.S. Department of Defense notified members of Congress that it requires an additional $80 billion in funding in connection with the military operation against Iran and other expenses.
