Former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell was sentenced to just over five years in prison after admitting to embezzling more than 400,000 pounds sterling ($540,000) in party funds to purchase items such as cars and luxury goods.

As 1news.az reports, this is according to Reuters.

Murrell is the former husband of former Scottish National Party leader and former prime minister Nicola Sturgeon, who suddenly resigned in 2023, shortly before she was arrested as part of an investigation into the party's finances. In March of last year she was acquitted.

Last month he pleaded guilty to the crime and on June 23 was sentenced by Edinburgh High Court to five years and three months in prison.

Judge Andrew Young noted that this sentence should serve as a warning to others.
