In France, thousands left without electricity due to heat

About 68,000 homes were left without electricity in Brittany (northwestern France) due to a transformer incident triggered by the heat.

This was reported by the prefecture of the Finistère department.

"Power outages continue at the moment: approximately 68,000 homes in the southwest of the department remain without electricity. For technical reasons, the power grid operator RTE will not be able to restore electricity to homes today. Connection will be made no earlier than the end of the day on June 24," the authorities' statement on X notes.

In France on Wednesday, a red danger level due to heat is in effect in 58 departments, and orange (second-to-last) in 31. Due to the abnormal heat, the operation of almost 10,000 educational institutions was suspended or their schedules changed, and rail transport was restricted. At least 5 people died, and at least 40 more people drowned in bodies of water, which is also linked to the consequences of the hot weather.
