UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer interested in NATO secretary general position
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who on June 22 officially announced his upcoming resignation as head of government, expressed a substantive interest in obtaining the position of NATO secretary general.
According to sources from the newspaper The Observer, the British politician plans to take this post in 2028, when the current mandate of Mark Rutte expires.
To secure the position, Starmer will need to obtain long-term political support from the future British government, as well as reach consensus with all 32 member states of the defense alliance, since the appointment procedure excludes a formal vote. The prime minister's supporters cite his close personal contacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the high level of trust demonstrated by European leaders at the recent G7 summit as his main advantages. At the same time, experts note that Starmer may find it difficult to conclude the necessary behind-the-scenes political agreements with all allies, since conducting such negotiations is not considered a strong suit of the outgoing Labour leader.
