Abbas Abbasov: Baku Initiative Group has brought the issue of decolonization to the international level
“The Baku Initiative Group has drawn the attention of the international community to the issue of decolonization not only by highlighting the suffering of colonized peoples, but also by bringing this topic to various platforms and levels — and not only in the political sphere.”
As 1news.az correspondent reports, this was stated to journalists by BIG Executive Director Abbas Abbasov during the international conference “Media and Decolonization: Rising Voices, Strengthening Narratives,” held in Baku at the initiative of the Baku Initiative Group.
According to A. Abbasov, today international organizations, including the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other specialized institutions, have included decolonization issues on their agendas. This has undoubtedly been the result of active public awareness: “There is no doubt that the growth of this awareness has been greatly facilitated by media representatives and news agencies. Information resources are among the key participants in the decolonization process. Today, in 2026, we have gathered Azerbaijani and foreign journalists at an international conference dedicated to the role of media in decolonization processes. This platform has provided an excellent opportunity for exchanging opinions and experiences. I believe that such initiatives will continue to make a significant contribution to the common cause in the years to come.”
