Hungary investigates Szijjarto's ties with Russia

Hungary's new government has initiated an investigation by law enforcement agencies into the contacts of former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto with Russia.

This was announced at a press conference in Budapest by Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar.

Journalists reminded him that he had previously publicly accused Szijjarto "of collusion with the Russians" and spoke of the need to investigate his ties with Russia, since it allegedly could be "treason." Without retracting these words, Magyar confirmed that "the investigation has begun."

At the same time, he noted that he does not yet want to "disclose the details of this proceeding and anticipate its outcome, since the case involves numerous documents containing state secrets and related to foreign policy." "As soon as something appears that can be shared, we will make it public," the prime minister added.

Szijjarto headed the Hungarian Foreign Ministry since 2014, and after the defeat on April 12 of the Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Alliance party in the parliamentary elections, he was a member of parliament. On July 15, he announced that he was resigning from his parliamentary mandate and moving to a high-ranking position at the Chinese automobile company BYD.
