Serzh Sargsyan is taken to court for sale of fortress in Gyumri

The Investigative Committee of Armenia has completed the preliminary investigation in the case against former defense minister and ex-president of the country Serzh Sargsyan, NEWS.am reports.

He is accused of the illegal alienation of the historical and cultural monument "Black Fortress" in Gyumri. According to the IC, in May 2005 Sargsyan organized the direct sale of the fortress (626.45 sq. m) and a plot of 0.7 hectares to a private individual for only 22.9 million drams.

As a result, the state lost ownership rights to an object of republican significance. Due to the deal, the fortress could not be included in the list of monuments protected by the state and not subject to alienation. Criminal prosecution has been initiated against Sargsyan under para. 5 part 2 art. 441 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. The case with the indictment has been sent to the prosecutor.
