Ukraine initiates emergency UN Security Council meeting after suspension of vessel traffic through Black Sea maritime corridor
Ukraine has initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after the suspension of vessel traffic through the Black Sea maritime corridor, said Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
"Russia holds global food security hostage. Over the past few days, Russia has bombed at least three civilian cargo ships. Several dozen crew members have been killed and injured. Today, no vessel has passed through Ukraine's Black Sea maritime corridor – right in the middle of the harvest season," he wrote on X.
Sybiha emphasized that this is deliberate economic and humanitarian terror.
The minister compared the situation to how Iran attacked energy routes in the Strait of Hormuz, while Russia is now attacking global food markets in the Black Sea.
"Millions of families in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America may face rising prices and hunger if this terror continues," he noted.
Sybiha stated that Ukraine has requested an urgent convening of the UN Security Council meeting on July 27.
"We call on all states, especially those affected, to immediately demand that Russia stop its attacks on freedom of navigation in the Black Sea. No country has the right to starve the world. Global pressure can stop Russian terror," the foreign minister stated.
