TURKPA: US Congress amendment may negatively affect normalization process between Baku and Yerevan

The Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TURKPA) stated that an amendment by the House Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Congress, containing a number of claims against Azerbaijan, may negatively affect the ongoing process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

This is stated in a statement by TURKPA Secretary General Ramil Hasan.

It is noted that TURKPA expresses serious concern over the advancement of this initiative against the backdrop of the ongoing process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as active efforts to establish peace in the South Caucasus.

"Legislative decisions on such important and sensitive issues should be based on an objective assessment of facts and principles of international law, rather than on the interests of individual lobby groups. TURKPA calls on legislative bodies to refrain from steps that could negatively affect the ongoing process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia," the statement said.

It also notes that TURKPA once again confirms its commitment to the principles of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as well as strengthening good-neighborliness.
