Court orders Meta to pay $567 million in case over harm to children's mental health
A court in the state of New Mexico has ordered the Meta corporation to pay $567 million in a case concerning harm caused to the mental health of minor users of its platforms.
This is stated in the court's ruling.
"The court orders Meta to contribute $567 million to a fund [to address the consequences of the harm caused]," the document says. The court deemed the creation of such a fund "necessary in view of the wide-scale consequences of the harm caused."
The corporation said it disagreed with the court's decision and intends to file an appeal.
In March, a jury ruled that Meta's platforms contributed to harming children's mental health. In addition, the jurors concluded that the corporation concealed information known to it about the sexual exploitation of minors on its platforms. At that time, Meta was also ordered to pay a fine of $375 million.
