Spain prepares to host 6 million solar eclipse observers
Spain is preparing for one of the largest mass events of this summer — the total solar eclipse that will take place on August 12.
Amid the expected influx of millions of tourists and residents of the country, the authorities are simultaneously stepping up security measures because of the persistent threat of wildfires, which is especially high at the height of the summer season.
Regional authorities of the territories located along the eclipse's path expect to receive about 6 million people. It is from these areas in continental Europe that the most favorable views of the rare astronomical phenomenon will open up. For the organized accommodation of spectators, 660 official sites have already been designated, as well as additional parking areas and camping spots.
The large-scale gathering of people in natural areas creates additional risks for the civil protection system. In this connection, the Spanish authorities plan to deploy more than 35,000 law enforcement officers to maintain order and prevent emergencies.
The Secretary General for Civil Protection and Emergencies of Spain's Interior Ministry, Virginia Barcones, stated that one of the main tasks will be preventing fires that may arise due to the human factor. In particular, even cigarettes thrown onto dry vegetation pose a danger.
According to Barcones, this summer has been especially difficult for Spain because of a series of major wildfires. Therefore, the authorities intend to restrict any activities capable of increasing the likelihood of new fire outbreaks in places where people gather en masse.
The operation will be coordinated from a special operations center in Madrid. From there, Spanish services will interact with regional governments and monitor the situation in the areas that will find themselves in the zone of the greatest influx of visitors.
The total solar eclipse will be one of the rarest astronomical events of the year. In Europe, it will be possible to observe it in its entirety from the territory of Spain and Iceland. In Spain, the eclipse is expected in the evening hours on Wednesday, which has already generated considerable interest among tourists and residents of the country.
However, holding mass events in conditions of extreme summer weather creates additional difficulties. Forecasters predict that in some areas the air temperature will rise to 40 degrees Celsius. At the same time, Spain's meteorological agency Aemet assesses the fire danger in a number of regions as high or very high.
By Monday evening, major wildfires were continuing in the provinces of Huelva, Segovia and Huesca. Rescue services continue to fight the fire, while the authorities are monitoring the spread of the outbreaks and possible threats to populated areas and infrastructure.
The scale of the damage from wildfires in Spain this year already significantly exceeds last year's figures. According to the country's Ministry of the Environment, since the beginning of 2026, fire has destroyed about 200,000 hectares of territory. That is approximately six times more than the area affected by fires during the same period in 2025.
