Pakistan defense ministry: US and Iran close to concluding peace

The United States and Iran are close to concluding a "certain kind" of agreement to resolve the conflict.

This was stated to Bloomberg by Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif.

"The situation is again shaping up in favor of a peace agreement or deal," he said. "Signals from the last two or three days indicate that we are close to some kind of agreement." The head of the defense department of the Islamic republic, which is acting as a mediator in resolving the conflict between the United States and Iran, added that establishing lasting peace would be in the interests of the Middle East region.

The United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the United States resumed large-scale strikes on Iran, accusing it of violating the terms of the agreements reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

On August 2, U.S. President Donald Trump reported that he had agreed to cancel a planned powerful strike on Iran in order to reach a deal with Tehran. According to him, Iran and Middle East countries asked Washington to refrain from the attack, as the parties had agreed on the outlines of a future agreement. On August 6, the Saudi channel Al Arabiya, citing a high-ranking source, reported that direct consultations between Washington and Tehran, conducted through intermediaries, had entered the final stage.
