India to commission five new nuclear reactors

India plans to commission five new nuclear reactors during the current decade.

This was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in an address to the nation on the occasion of the country's Independence Day.

"Nuclear energy is one of the main means of ensuring energy security. By 2047, we are moving toward the goal of raising its capacity to 100 gigawatts," he said.
"In this decade alone, we intend to commission five new nuclear reactors," he emphasized.
Modi recalled that in 2026 India made progress in mastering fast neutron reactor technology. "This has become an important step on the path to the country's self-reliance in the field of nuclear fuel," Modi noted.

The head of the Indian government also spoke about developments in the exploration of energy resources at sea.
"Previously, 99% of India's coastline was designated as zones where subsoil exploration was prohibited. Now these territories are open for development. We are actively engaged in deep-water exploration and the search for new reserves," Modi said.
