Australia will exclude AI-generated songs from music charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has introduced new requirements for music releases seeking to enter the national charts.

Under the updated rules, compositions must be largely the result of human creativity.

At the same time, the use of artificial intelligence tools is not completely prohibited, but the authorship of a song must belong to a human, and the lead vocals and main instrumental parts must be performed by people.

ARIA noted that the changes are aimed at preserving and supporting the human contribution to the creation of music. The association emphasized that Australian performers today are competing for the attention of audiences in an extremely competitive music market.

The discussion about the need for new rules was prompted by the situation surrounding Australian DJ Josh Fawaz's cover of Madonna's song "Like A Prayer." The track recently topped ARIA's dance chart and took second place in the country's overall music ranking. The track also received wide play on commercial radio stations and gathered more than 48 million streams on Spotify.

After criticism from listeners, Fawaz added elements created using generative artificial intelligence to the composition.

ARIA stated that it does not intend to encourage the promotion of music created with the help of artificial intelligence without substantial human involvement.
