United States sets date for trial over September 11 attacks

The trial of the key defendants in the case of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will begin on June 5, 2028, at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo.

This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing a ruling by military judge Lieutenant Colonel Michael Schram of the United States Air Force.

According to the document, the prosecution insisted that the trial begin on January 11, 2027. Schram rejected this motion, noting in his ruling that these deadlines were unrealistic. He also emphasized that the court needs additional time to resolve protracted pretrial disputes related to the admissibility of evidence and confessions obtained by FBI and CIA officers.

According to the document, those to stand trial are the alleged organizer of the attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, Mustafa al-Hawsawi and Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, also known as Ammar al-Baluchi. Their defense has consistently sought to have key confessions excluded from the case files, arguing that they were given under torture in secret CIA prisons, the ruling states.
