The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opens in New York
The regular, 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (GA) opens at the world organization's headquarters in New York.
Its work will continue until September 7, 2027, and the central event of the first month will traditionally be the high-level general political debate with the participation of heads of state and government and foreign ministers.
The session will take place against the backdrop of ongoing international conflicts, the financial difficulties of the UN itself, and its reform. One of the features of the coming year will be the election of a new secretary-general of the organization. The term of António Guterres, who has led the UN since 2017, expires on December 31, 2026.
