Erdogan will visit Syria soon - Hakan Fidan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit Syria soon, amid steps by Damascus and Ankara to deepen political and economic cooperation.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said this on Sunday.

At a joint press conference following a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani in Damascus, Fidan said that preparations are underway to create the necessary conditions for the visit.

During the meeting, the parties discussed strengthening bilateral ties and stepping up the work of the joint high-level committee covering political, diplomatic, economic, and military-political cooperation, as well as issues of energy, education, culture, and the return of refugees.

Al-Shibani said that the committee will operate under joint leadership and hold regular sessions, and that a permanent secretariat and specialized committees in various areas will be created to monitor the implementation of the decisions taken.

Fidan, for his part, said that the two countries are creating mechanisms to facilitate doing business and investment, including issues of financing, visas, work permits, and certification. He noted the high interest of Turkish investors in the energy and textile industries.

Relations between Damascus and Ankara have been expanding rapidly since the fall of the previous Syrian government in December 2024.
