Controls tightened at Russia's borders: the reason

Sanitary controls have been tightened at Russia's borders because of the risk of the Ebola virus entering the country.

This was reported by the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Popova said that the agency's specialists, together with the Border Service, are checking all citizens arriving in Russia. The controls also extend to transit routes from epidemiologically unfavorable regions.

If passengers are found to have symptoms of deteriorating health, they are immediately hospitalized.

«This entire system works so that we do not have any risks,» the head of Rospotrebnadzor stated.

In May, the authorities of the DR Congo announced an outbreak of Ebola in the country. It was caused by the Bundibugyo virus, against which there is no vaccine or approved treatment. Experts of the World Health Organization (WHO) believe that the spread of the infection could have begun as early as February.

According to data as of the end of August, 5,600 people had been infected with the virus, of whom 2,700 died.
