Canada discusses possible contribution to loan for Ukraine with the EU

Canadian authorities are holding talks with the European Union on Ottawa's possible participation in providing Ukraine with a €90 billion loan.

This is reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.

The parties expect to determine the amount that Canada will be able to allocate as part of the loan to Ukraine before the EU summit in Montreal at the end of October.

According to the publication, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to strengthen transatlantic ties and reduce Ottawa's dependence on Washington. Sources claim that he intends to form an "alliance of liberal powers" supporting a multilateral order.

Canada's participation in lending to Ukraine, as the Financial Times notes, is meant to demonstrate Ottawa's commitment to its European allies.
