Belgium no longer considers the U.S. the closest ally of the country and the EU

Belgium's Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the United States under its current leader, Donald Trump, is no longer a reliable ally for the country and for the states of the European Union as a whole.

This is stated in a document reviewed by the Financial Times (FT).

"It is now clear that the American partner is no longer the ally it was in the past," the document notes. According to the FT, this strategic document was prepared by the kingdom's foreign policy agency at the end of last year.

Its authors called for a "thorough reassessment" of relations between the EU and Belgium on the one hand and the United States on the other, adding that what is currently happening in the United States "will likely jeopardize a number of vital interests of Belgium and the European Union."

Pointing to the need to "engage with the current U.S. administration," the analysts recommend continuing discussions with the Democratic opposition, engaging with Congress, and "identifying new generations of bipartisan elites who could play a role in the America of tomorrow."
