Vucic hands over the powers of Serbia's president to Ana Brnabic

Aleksandar Vucic has handed over the duties of president of Serbia to the acting speaker of the National Assembly (the country's unicameral parliament), Ana Brnabic.

"I will guard this position until the people elect a new president," Brnabic noted during the ceremony of handing over the presidential regalia.

Vucic announced his resignation on September 27. Under the Serbian constitution, the election of a new head of state must be held no later than December 27.

Early parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held on October 25. Vucic will head the list of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) and will become its candidate for prime minister. The SPP's main opponent will be the "Student List" alliance, headed by 56-year-old cardiologist from Novi Sad Ilija Srdanovic.
