Number of Ebola cases in Congo exceeds 8,000
The number of confirmed cases of Ebola fever in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has for the first time exceeded 8,000 since the start of the ongoing outbreak of the disease.
According to the latest data from the country's National Institute of Public Health, 8,067 cases of infection have been registered. The number of deaths has reached 3,901 people.
The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of the Ebola virus. In terms of the number of people infected and killed, it has already surpassed the 2018–2020 epidemic and has become the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak in the history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
At the same time, in scale the current outbreak is smaller than the epidemic in West Africa in 2014–2016. At that time, more than 28,600 cases of infection were registered in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and more than 11,000 people died.
