Trump not opposed to Iran's participation in the World Cup

American President Donald Trump stated that he does not object to the Iranian football team's participation in the World Cup, with matches scheduled for June in the United States.

"We would not want to influence Iranian athletes who wish to participate in the upcoming World Cup this summer," Trump told reporters at the White House.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington has not banned Iran from participating in the championship.

"No one from the U.S. has told them they cannot come. (...) The issue with Iran would not be with their athletes. It would be with other people they might want to bring along. Some of them have ties to the IRGC," Rubio told reporters in the Oval Office.

"What they cannot bring into our country is a group of IRGC terrorists pretending to be journalists and sports coaches," he noted.
